Finnish Jazz Legend Heikki Koskinen and Bay Area saxophonist Rent Romus bring their unique jazz and world music suite Manala to Greater Goods in Ojai. Manala, which means netherworld in the Finnish language is a musical journey representing a deep cultural rediscovery through the lens of music. Co-written and produced by composers Rent Romus and Heikki Koskinen, this original suite of music weaves the elements of jazz, neo-traditional Finnish, and free improvisation inspired by the mythic prose, rune poetry, and songs of cultural liberation and identity found in the Finnish epic known as the Kalevala and the folklore Uralic cultural shamanic traditions. They will be joined by iconoclast multi-reedist Vinny Golia, flutist Emily Hay and bassist Sean Riddle. Opening will be a trio with Emily Hay, Tracy Hui on banjo, and Jim Connolly on bass.
