To ensure its prominence in STEM productivity and innovation, the United States has two valuable and underutilized resources to tap into: students of color and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), which produce one-fifth of the nation’s STEM bachelor’s degree recipients. In this talk, Cristina Villalobos discusses the contributions of MSIs to the workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and provides recommendations to expand effective practices beyond these institutions.
Villalobos is the Myles & Sylvia Aaronson Endowed Professor of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences and founding director of the Center of Excellence in STEM Education at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. A first-generation college graduate, she received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and her PhD in computational and applied mathematics from Rice University. She received the 2019 Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science and Diversifying Computing from the Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in Information Technology, the 2013 Distinguished Undergraduate Institution Mentor Award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, a 2012 HENAAC Luminary Award from Great Minds in STEM, and the 2013 University of Texas Board of Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award.
