PEACE AND SERENITY | Day Trip to East Santa Cruz Island

I have lived in the Channel Islands Harbor area for seven years now. On a bright and sunny day, I can see the sea lions, sea birds and in the distance, the magnificent Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands from my balcony. I haven’t been to either of them. Doesn’t make sense for a girl living here that long, does it? So I called Cherryl Connally, the co-owner of Island Packers Cruises in the Ventura Harbor (they celebrated 50 years last year), to see if she could sneak me on for a last minute day trip on a sunny Sunday....

FROM THE PAWS UP | Search Dog Foundation accepting item donations for newly rebuilt Search City

On Dec. 4, 2017, the evening the Thomas Fire started, employees at the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) in Santa Paula prepared emergency bags with dog food, water, leashes, medicine and other necessities as they evacuated with 26 in-training search and rescue dogs to a hotel in Ventura. “A majority of the dogs are shelter dogs,” said Denise Sanders, communications and development officer for SDF. “They stayed at the hotel for more than two weeks in a conference room and were still able to perform training on the beach.” The fire ended up destroying an 1800 historic cabin...

BORN TO BOUNCE | Trampoline class provides full body workout

Like most people who make their New Year’s Resolutions to focus on health and exercising more, I had been looking for a fun and unique cardio exercise to start the year off right. When I came across the Boogie Bounce trampoline class at Studio 8 Fitness in Ventura, I knew this was something I couldn’t pass up. As I recall, I was a kid the last time I bounced on a trampoline. Boogie Bounce was founded in 1996 by Jenny Belcher, who resides in the Midlands in England. Classes are currently available in 13 countries. Coincidentally, Belcher was in...

SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED | Area resident spends year writing, gathering cards for Thomas Fire first responders

Oak View resident Julia Hornbeck has spent the past year doing an incredible deed: making sure that each Thomas Fire first responder is thanked through a handmade card. “It’s been a continuous effort and I spent a year doing whatever I needed to do to get it done,” Hornbeck said. “The reaction [from first responders] I think is going to be great.” Hornbeck and her family evacuated their home the day after the Thomas Fire started on Dec. 5, 2017. She said they were fortunate that their home was not directly in the line of fire and returned to...

TAXING TAXES | Breaking down the new tax bill requirements

As Ventura resident Jocelyn Smith prepares to file for the 2018 tax season, she is concerned that she will have to owe more than in past years under the new tax bill. “It’s just so confusing,” Smith said. “I keep hearing about all of the changes and I really don’t want to have to owe. I am trying to save for my first home.” Smith is not the only one who has expressed concern over the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Passed by Congress in December 2017, the U.S. Congress’s Committee on Ways and Means said the new act...
