Tingling taste buds at Salsa Festival

Photos by Kateri Wozny Salsa and chips are one of my favorite snacks, so when I was asked to judge this year’s Amateur Salsa Recipe Contest at the 26th annual Oxnard Salsa Festival, I jumped at the chance. Amateur Salsa Contest Cynthia Hernandez and Erica Mata, representing Tacos Don Chente, which has same owners as Limon Y Sal and El Pescador. Fine Indian flavor at The Masala Twist

The Masala Twist2810 Harbor Blvd., #B1,$1.95-14.95 I live in the Channel Islands Harbor and on my walks I had always come across an Indian restaurant called the Masala Twist. The restaurant opened last summer by owner Lakhwinder Singh who felt the need to have authentic Indian cuisine in the harbor. I love to support my community, so I had my two friends tag along for dinner one night. Onion Kulcha, Paneer Masala, Raita, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Coconut Curry, Samosa and Mint Chutney, Mango Chutney and Mango Pickle. Onion Kulcha, Chicken Biryani, Samosa, Paneer Masala and Chicken Coconut Curry....

Cool Treats at Buttercups

Buttercups1121 S. Victoria Ave., Oxnard805-985-5202 Summer is officially here and I love stopping by my favorite frozen yogurt shop, Buttercups, to cool down from the heat. Co-owners Bonny Chick and Marcie Mills always dreamed about owning their own ice cream shop near the beach and made it come true in 2013. According to the website, the name “Buttercups” actually came from a nickname Bonny’s dad would call her. The ladies get their batches of flavored yogurt from Honey Hill Farms in Russellville, Arkansas, within 10 days for the freshest taste. The journey begins at the “Bottoms” station where an...

Garden to glass craft cocktails at Oak & Iron

Oak & Iron2967 Thousand Oaks Blvd.Thousand My friends and I needed to shake off the June Gloom vibe, so after work one night we headed over to a new homemade craft cocktail bar called Oak & Iron in Thousand Oaks, where we heard the atmosphere was lively and friendly. So long gloom! Owner Andrew Pletcher wanted to create a cocktail bar along the strip focusing on local ingredients throughout Ventura County and it does not disappoint. The menu rotates seasonally and offers probably some of the freshest and yummiest cocktails I have ever had. My friends and I...

BUGGED OUT | Oxnard Insect Festival invites public into a bug’s life

Crickets, butterflies, spiders, beetles, flies . . . For those who have a love for all insects, those are just some of the ones that will be on display during the Oxnard Insect Festival at Plaza Park on Saturday, June 1. City of Oxnard Manager Alex Nguyen proposed the insect festival after seeing a similar festival in the City of Riverside, where Nguyen used to work as an assistant city manager. “The first impression of insects for many is ‘ew’ but we hope this festival will provide a sense of appreciation and value for insects,” said Renee Rakestraw, recreation...
