January is known to some as California Restaurant Month. And every January, Visit Oxnard celebrates the many establishments that help make the city a delicious dining destination with Oxnard Restaurant Week. Typically, Visit Oxnard works with local eateries to develop specials, new menu items, reduced prices and more — with a large swath of restaurants participating citywide. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, it’s definitely a different kind of celebration in 2021 . . . but still a great way to eat well and support area institutions which have been particularly hard hit as a result of the pandemic. Festivities are already underway (it officially started on Monday, Jan. 18) and continue through Sunday, Jan. 24.

If getting out of the kitchen and bringing home some takeout sounds good to you, you’ll do more than just throw some much-needed revenue toward your favorite local restaurant — you’ll be entered to win some great prizes, too.

Visit Oxnard has partnered with radio personalities Rico and Mambo for the “Guys Gotta Eat” challenge. As part of this endeavor, the popular DJs of Q95.9 FM are asking residents to place specific orders from Oxnard restaurants each day of the week, take a photo of their takeout, and post it to Instagram, tagging @visitoxnardca, @ricoandmambo and the restaurant itself. All restaurants in the city of Oxnard are eligible.

Every purchase earns participants one entry toward $500 in Oxnard restaurant gift cards, courtesy of Visit Oxnard. The gift cards cover many local favorites, such as Ragamuffin Coffee Roasters, Moqueca Brazilian Cuisine, Masala Twist, Yolanda’s Mexican Cafe and more. And, yes, there’s still plenty of time to enter. Cuisine to order, photograph and post to Instagram includes:

Thursday, Jan. 21 — Asian Food: Chinese Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, etc.

Friday, Jan. 22 — European Food: Italian, Mediterranean, French — anything from the continent of Europe.

Saturday, Jan. 23 — Seafood Saturday: Fish, crab, lobster, mussels, etc.

Sunday, Jan. 24 — Breakfast, Brunch and American: Bacon and eggs, sandwiches, acai bowls, burgers, barbecue, steak and more.

“The Takeout Challenge is a safe way to support Oxnard restaurants and showcase our local businesses online,” said Ashley Golden, Oxnard’s assistant city manager. “We look forward to the virtual celebration on social media of the great food and drinks crafted in Oxnard.”
