Community Action of Ventura County has once again hosted the People’s BBQ, with 130 individuals in attendance. The event, which took place on Thursday, Aug. 1, is the brainchild of Victor Ortiz, a graduate of the Ventura County Rescue Mission program who went on to become a licensed barber and later began volunteering at Community Action to cut hair for clients. The third annual People’s BBQ featured food, music, guest speakers and free haircuts. “Jesus reached through the fire and brought me out,” Ortiz told Cynder Sinclair, Community Action’s executive director, “so now I try to be an example by feeding hope to those who are down and out like I was. I want them to know God has a plan for them.” For more information, visit www.ca-vc.org.
