On Tuesday, Sept. 5, President Donald Trump via Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced plans to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program created by executive order under President Barack Obama in 2012. The program, known by its acronym DACA, gave children brought to the United States illegally by their parents the opportunity to apply for the rights to work and attend college, serve in the military and more. It is estimated that 800,000 “DREAMers” (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors act) recipients currently reside in the country.

On Friday, Sept. 1, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Oxnard’s Plaza Park to voice support for DACA. Future Leaders of America says that over 7,000 DREAMers currently reside in Ventura County. Rallies were co-hosted in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara as well.
