Ventura County Derby Darlins celebrate 10 years

The Ventura County Derby Darlins will celebrate 10 years of roller skating mayhem with a match between the Brass Knuckle Betties and the Sucker Punch Sallies, this Saturday, March 25, at 6 p.m.

Roller derby has grown in popularity since the early 2000s. A team consists of four “blockers” and one “jammer.” The two teams skate counter-clockwise around the rink and try to prevent the opposing jammer from getting through their pack. Each time she does and successfully completes a lap around the track, she scores a point.

On Oct. 27, 2007, the Derby Darlins hosted their first major intramural event, Battle for the Coast 2007 Roller Derby Tournament. At this weekend’s event, Derby Darlins from the past and present will unite to duke it out in celebration of the decade.

The event will take place at Freedom Park’s outdoor hockey court, 528 Corvair St., Ventura. Tickets are $7-10. For more information, visit
