Five Threads Brewing Co.
31133 Via Colinas, #109, Westlake Village
Ah, the joy of finding a brewery in a somewhat secluded row of eclectic shops in a part of town you’ve never heard of before. I am not complaining; I actually find it fun. I like to imagine that I’ve found my own beer-centric Narnia, sans lion with an agenda.
Five Threads Brewing Company in Westlake Village is a massive undertaking, though the tasting room is rather small. A menu reveals a slew of options that can seem a bit overwhelming at first — until you realize it’s like a game of darts: Throw the dart, pick a beer and enjoy. They’re all good.
In light of the end of the political season, I first chose as one of my five samples included with the flight the Brexit Brown, a robust English brown with a distinct hit of toast. This one will cleanse your palate of any bad taste left after Nov. 8. Aria, an American red ale, was a nice follow-up with its fruity aroma and light body.
Also in celebration of the way the election went, I decided to go distinctly Russian in trying the Cherenkov Stout — a whammy of a stout, heavy with chocolate and coffee characteristics. The Pantry Porter and Craig’s triple IPA rounded off my introduction to Five Threads’ very impressive lineup.
Over a game of Connect Four, the wife and I enjoyed our tasters — and frankly speaking, I typically do not finish flights. Something about mixing various beers together just doesn’t sit right with my stomach. I finished all five tasters at Five Threads, if that tells you anything of the quality and tastiness.
On the wall behind us were posters touting the brewery’s expansion plans: a patio, more brewing capacity and more. If more room means more of a likelihood that Five Threads brews will reach on to the west end of the county, sign me up: These guys know their beer
So until I can get back to Westlake, I’ll be counting down the days until my next visit (when, hopefully, the 2016 election will be long behind us).
