Over 150 surfers participated in the paddle out memorial on Sunday, July 18, for local surf legend Mike Smith.
Smith was a lifelong resident of Ventura, with the exception of attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and his service in Vietnam. He passed away on April 11 at the young age of 68. He was the “Mayor of C-Street,” loved surfing with his chocolate labs and telling stories on the promenade. He loved helping people and was a friend to many. It is the surfers tradition to do a paddle out in memory of one of their own. The event also turned out to be a reunion of friends from all over.
Ventura surf legend, Mayor of C Street, Mike Smith, died April 11.
