The 2013 Workforce Investment Board Awards (WIB) were recently presented to individuals, employers and organizations who have played significant roles in building a strong workforce in Ventura County. State Assemblyman Jeff Gorell, R-Camarillo, (pictured) received the WIB Champion for Prosperity Award; Capt. David Sasek of Naval Base Ventura County received the WIB Leadership Award; Tavi Udrea, global training and development director for Haas Automation Inc. in Oxnard received the WIB Collaborative Action Award; and the Port of Hueneme, Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital’s Auxiliary received the WIB Youth Opportunity Award. … Gail Uellendahl, a practicing psychologist, was named the recipient of the 2013 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence at California Lutheran University (CLU), and she will deliver the keynote speech to welcome new students in September. The award recognizes professors held in high regard by peers, the students and the rest of the university community. Uellendahl joined CLU in 1992 and currently chairs the counseling and guidance department in CLU’s Graduate School of Education. … TOTV, the city of Thousand Oaks’ government television channel, was honored by SCAN National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors with the 2013 Star Awards for excellence in government television programming. TOTV received first-, second- and third-place honors for various shows in the categories of economic development, special audience and documentary. … National Public Radio station KCLU was the most honored small-market radio station at the 66th annual Associated Press Television and Radio Association Mark Twain Awards on June 22. KCLU received five awards at the Pasadena Convention Center ceremony for stories that aired in 2012. The station competed in Division II against small-market stations in the 13 western states represented in APTRA. The station has won more APTRA awards than any other TV or radio newsroom in Ventura or Santa Barbara county.

VCCool’s Ventura Bicycle Union (VBU) was recently awarded grants to continue its effort toward creating a safer bicycling environment. VCU received $20,000 from the McCune Foundation and $4,149 from Patagonia, which will also donate $1 per mile that each VCCool employee logs during “bike-to-work” week.
Patty Peinado was recognized as June’s Teacher of the Month by the Ventura Commerce and Education Foundation. With more than 20 years’ experience, Peinado is a bilingual kindergarten teacher at Sheridan Way Elementary in Ventura, where she runs the Reading Recovery Program and Kindergarten Intervention. … Pediatric dentists Betsy Kaplan and Cathy Chien of Oxnard Children’s Dental Group have launched the Children’s Dental Group Spaceship Scholarship Program. Longtime Oxnard law firm Nordman Cormany Hair & Compton announced it will close this summer after 75 years of service in Ventura County. Numerous judges and new law firms in the county have roots in the firm, and the Ventura County Bar Association gives tribute each year by awarding the Nordman Award to extraordinary leaders in the community.
The Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center (SPARC) celebrated its one-year anniversary with an animal petting zoo, raffles, live music and a dunk tank where attendees could dunk SPARC’s executive director William LeFeuvre. SPARC is the only no-kill shelter in Ventura County. … The Ventura Harbor is celebrating 50 years and welcomes the public to commemorate the event throughout the year. … The Ventura Yacht Club will celebrate 75 years this summer. It is one of the few clubs on the coast that owns its own clubhouse and slips.
