Though many people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16, it is actually a commemoration of the victory of the Mexican army over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Celebrated primarily in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, U.S. cities, especially those with a significant Mexican population, have embraced the holiday with cultural festivities.
