Making a difference: Ventura Commerce and Education Foundation and Ventura City Corps have partnered to launch Together Helping Replenish Inventory for Ventura Educators and Students (THRIVES). Area businesses will place donation boxes in their lobbies or offices, and community members are invited to shop for items from the THRIVES Master Supply List and drop off at participating businesses. THRIVES school supply drive kicks off July 18, and donations will be accepted at participating business locations until Aug. 5. And the award goes to …: Ventura-based businesswoman Ann Deal, founder and CEO of intimate apparel and accessories manufacturer Fashion Forms, will be honored with the H.U.G. award Nov. 2 at a gala fundraiser in New York City. The award will be given by the Intimate Apparel Square Club, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting pediatric rehabilitation….
Moving up: Tom Burt, previously one of the owners and founders of Sun Pacific Solar Electric in Santa Barbara, joins California Solar Electric in Ojai as its newest sales representative. …After years of experience with another prominent jeweler in Ventura, Christopher Dykes has joined the staff of Joseph’s Fine Jewelers, owned by Joseph Sehati and located in Ventura’s Pacific View Mall. Dykes is certified by the Gemological Institute of America and comments, “Showing integrity and great customer service is what I strive for. Joseph’s Jewelers shares the same values. I know this is great fit for both of us.”
In academia: The Henry L. “Hank” Lacayo Institute (HLI) at CSU Channel Islands recently received a $25,000 grant from AT&T. The purpose of the grant will be to fund a Telecommunications/Technology Literacy/Workforce Development and Community Sustainability Forum, which will take place during the fourth quarter of 2011. … CSU, Channel Islands was named a 2011 Great College to Work For, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Winning honors in seven categories this year, CI was named on The Chronicle’s 2011 Honor Roll, one of only 42 institutions nationwide. …California Lutheran University has received a $250,000 grant to open the Hugh and Hazel Darling Center for Applied Scientific Computing, which will enable the university to develop new courses and summer research opportunities. The center, opening this month, will also offer courses to middle and high school students to encourage them to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics in college.
Be sure to attend: The Ventura Chamber of Commerce announced that the third annual Arts in the Park will be held Aug. 20, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Aug. 21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Ventura Harbor. The event will feature fine arts and crafts and music. … Ventura Young Professionals Group will hold the Work It Fashion Show Aug. 26 at the Erle Stanley Gardner Building on Main Street. The event will bring together business professionals, and showcase styles by local retailers and designers.
