OPENING: Le Petite Reve Chocolates, 1124 S. Seaward Ave., Ventura, has a planned grand opening on Feb. 14. This new chocolate, coffee, tea and pastry shop will be a hit come Valentine’s Day. Bring your loved ones and enjoy the taste of chocolate and pastries for a while.

ON THE HOUSE: Johnson Family Dental located at 88 N. Oak St., suite 2A, Ventura, will be having its Sixth Annual Free Day of Dentistry on Sunday, Feb. 20. This special day is dedicated to all of the sponsors of Johnson Family Dentistry.

ANCHORS AWEIGH: The Channel Islands Boating Center in Oxnard is under construction after a 10-year hiatus. The center will have storage, exhibits and instructions on boating. One of the primary exhibits on display is the shipwreck of the Winfield Scott, which left 400 passengers stranded on Anacapa Island in 1853. The center is expected to open in about 12 to 18 months.

KUDOS: California State University, Channel Islands, for being one of the 115 institutions nationwide chosen by the Carnegie Foundation for its 2010 Community Engagement Classification. CSUCI was chosen for its hard work in practicing its commitment to community engagement and service learning. Service learning is a teaching method, linking course content to “real-life” experiences that center on a community need or issue. “Integrating service into student learning, faculty research and staff activities not only provides better-prepared students, but also strengthens the entire community,” says CSUCI President Richard R. Rush. … The Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation will be celebrating its 18th Annual David C. Fainer, M.D., Awards on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Hotel. The nine “healthcare heroes” who will be recognized at the event include Health Care Agency Director Michael B. Powers (Health Care Professional of the Year), Robert Lefkowitz, M.D. (Physician of the Year), the late James Giles, M.D. (Physician Emeritus), Rebecca Swift, R.N. (Hospital Nurse of the Year). The awards are being handed to those who have closely resembled the late Dr. Fainer and have shown the dedication to help the healthcare needs of Ventura County… The City of Thousand Oaks has been awarded LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for the city’s Community Transportation Center Building project. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the nation’s top program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. The project achieved LEED Silver certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies…The Camarillo Health Care District’s Chronic Disease Self-Management Program at the Wellness & Caregiver Center of Ventura County is being honored with the “Best of 2010” from the Association of California Healthcare Districts (ACHD). This award recognizes that the Camarillo Health Care District has cooperated in a distinct and innovative manner to bring much-needed services to the community.

The board is seeking nominations for those who have paved the way for the new climate change. Nominations can include anyone committed to protecting public health and preserving our natural surroundings.
