BOWLING FOR SOUP Being funny in rock and roll these days is almost a crime. Breaking the unspoken rule that good songwriting doesn’t have to always be serious is Texas’ Bowling For Soup. Against all odds the band has been together,  touring relentlessly for well over a decade, and in the process has had a remarkable career complete with a gold record, Grammy nomination, an appearance on the Tonight Show and a massive following in the United Kingdom, where its sense of humor is better appreciated. They are playing a last minute and rare appearance at the Canyon this Saturday night, opening for Sugar Ray. You’ll laugh harder than a night at a comedy club and you’ll hear some first-rate pop songwriting from the band’s lead singer Jaret Reddick. Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Canyon, 28912 Roadside Dr., Agoura Hills. (818) 879-5016, www.canyonclub.net.

Rey Fresco and Kyle Hunt and the King Gypsy  will be at Bombay Bar & Grill on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Comic Carol Leifer (the woman who Seinfeld’s Elaine was supposedly modeled after) will perform at the Ventura Harbor Comedy Club on Thursday, Jan. 28.

The Satellite Orchestra with Jody Watley will be at Charline’s in Ventura, on Friday, Jan. 29.

Also: raffle and auction for very special goodies including a Timmy Curran suft board, Chris Hillman music and more.  Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Lodge, 11 S. Ash St., Ventura. The entirely instrumental album seems to transcend the notion of musical genre, incorporating jazz, rock and funk-infused with elements of classical and country music. Masterful instrumentation and varied musical styles distinguish the band’s eclectic sound and give fans high hopes for a memorable performance. Morse is also well-known for his affiliations with Kansas and Deep Purple.  Friday Jan. 15, 9 p.m., The Canyon, 28921 Roadside Drive, Agoura Hills. (818) 879-5016 or www.canyonclub.net.

ROBBEN FORD Named one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century” by  Musician magazine, Ford has played with the likes of Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Witherspoon, Vinnie Colaiuta and the Yellowjackets. He began his charmed career at age 18 when he landed a gig with blues legend Charlie Musselwhite, and the rest is history. An intuitive player, he’s known for his ability to seamlessly fuse genres. In regard to shredding, Ford once said, “I don’t want to show anybody licks, that’s got nothing to do with real music. The whole thing is to get the concept.” Friday Jan. 8, at the Canyon. 28912 Roadside Drive, Agoura. (818) 879-5016.
