GOV’T MULE A side project of the Allman Brothers Band with guitar guru Warren Haynes at the helm (Haynes replaced Dicky Betts), Gov’t Mule jams the classic rock proper-like with a biker’s heart and a Southern man’s soul. That is to say these guys are pro all the way and masters of their instruments. Rolling Stone magazine even gave Haynes a coveted slot in its top 100 guitarists, placing him at No. 22. Critics write them off as a glorified cover band, but who doesn’t want to hear the best songs in rock pounded out with such authority, passion and skill? Check out Gov’t Mule’s version of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” on YouTube and try not to smile. Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Ventura Theater, 26 S. Chestnut St., Ventura. 653-0721, www.venturatheater.net.

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at the Canyon on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Honorary Ventura scensters Monster Eats the Pilot with El Camino Real at Epic on Friday, Sept. 25.

There are three opportunities to see Big Band, the annual gathering of members from Le Meu Le Purr and Army of Freshmen on one stage performing cover hits from the ages, this weekend. Thursday, Sept. 24 at Bombay Bar & Grill; Friday, Sept. 25 at Nicholby’s and Saturday, Sept. 26 at Billy O’s.

PECULIAR PRETZELMEN They say they’ve come to ruin everything and wreck our lives, but it’s hard to imagine how their old-timey, whimsical repertoire could create anything but warm tinglies and goofy smiles. One part Americana, one part carnival music, a dash of Tom Waits and a shot of whiskey, the Peculiar Pretzelmen inspire images of fortune tellers, caravans and traveling salesmen. An apt soundtrack for the new depression, they’d fit nicely on the pages of No Depression magazine. They may indeed be peculiar, but you’ll have to check ’em out live to see whether or not their flexibility extends beyond musical prowess. They will be joined by Ventura’s own peculiarity: Deepakalypse. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Zoey’s, 451 E. Main St., Ventura. 652-1137 or www.zoeyscafe.com

The Average White Band will appear at the Canyon on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The Lovemaster Craig Shoemaker will appear Friday, Sept. 18, 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19, 7 and 9 p.m., at the Ventura Harbor Comedy Club.

L’IL GIZELLE  It’s not technically “after dark” but we have it on good authority that this Latina from East L.A. with a hit record in Europe has the pipes to drown out the train as it rolls by Seaside Park at the Primer Nationals this weekend.

The 21-year old bombshell is flooring audiences worldwide with her powerhouse vocal treatment of soul standards a la Etta James and Mavis Staples. Suffice it to say, if Stax Records was still around, she’d be signed.  Saturday, Sept. 4, 2 p.m. at the Primer Nationals at Seaside Park, in Ventura. For more info call 216-2421 or visit www.primernationals.com.
