Known now as A-49, the first bald eagle chick hatched on the Channel Islands National Park in over 50 years, fledged from its nest on the north end of Santa Cruz Island. After weeks of practice hopping from tree limb to tree limb and feeling the air through its outstretched wings, the young bald eagle soared for the first time on July 14. The new addition to the northern isles affectionately known as "Cruz" and "Junior" to those viewing the eaglet\’s progress on the publicly broadcast Web camera and the play-by-play posts from an associated discussion board, allowed hundreds of viewers from around the globe to join biologists as they observed the chick showing typical pre-flight behavior over the past two weeks. "It\’s been a pretty amazing year for bald eagles on the northern Channel Islands," said Dave Rempel, a biologist for the Institute for Wildlife Studies, who has spent long hours monitoring the large nest. "We are thrilled to have been able to share the excitement of watching A-49 grow and fledge with viewers from all over." A-49 is the tag number placed on the wings of the eaglet, which is also equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) to monitor the raptor\’s comings and goings across the islands. The tag was attached to its wings when the chick was 8 weeks old. Since leaving the nest, the...Read More
My girlfriend of eight months is so attached to her cat that she takes it with her when she goes to the toilet. She also lets it sleep in the bed and drink out of the bathroom sink. She has cat knick-knacky things everywhere and, worse, cat hair everywhere — on the bed, on counters, on clothes and food. To me, cats are filthy animals that cover themselves with spit, lick their behinds, track used kitty litter all over and shed hair and dander. I think about our future together and wonder whether she’d give up a cat to be with me. You may think this sounds unreasonable, but I equate living with a cat to asking a woman to move into a house with a dirt floor. — Catastrophe There are people with cats, and then there are Cat People. People with cats shrug their shoulders when they hear somebody isn’t a fan of the species. Cat People march out to the garage, push aside all the kitty posters and spare toilet seat covers with ears and whiskers, and arm their nukes. Take this Cat Person, for example, who spotted an “I Hate Cats” entry on some guy’s blog and came out clawing: “I bet your parents never hugged you and the’re divorced. You most likely have no friends and spend your time watching porne on the internet!...Read More
Congressional candidate with no love for Congress Write-in Congressional Candidate Henry Nicolle has denounced all his representatives in public office. “Until such time that the people may reconstitute lawful representation with constitutional authority,” he declares, “I hereby withdraw my tolerance of government at the hands of any man or woman currently in public office or employment.” He argues that no one in government has authority because everyone is acting outside the authority of the Constitution. “They’re actually anarchists,” he charges. “The American Revolution formed the basis for the great American experiment: Can people be their own government or not? We failed tremendously on the government side because we let people in government take our powers away from us,” says Nicolle, who is running for office in California’s 24th district with no party affiliation. He is using this forceful criticism as an open invitation to his series of public forums, where he hopes to discuss the possibility of an indictment of President Bush “and others” whom he also believes to have been complicit in the atrocities of September 11. “The president and Congress proceed to operate in a mode outside of the Constitution, which is treason, especially when their activities bring us to a state where other people go to war with us,” he says. But his meeting has little to do with his own campaign; he argues that there...Read More
