CBF returns California Beer Festival returns to Ventura Sept. 21

Ventura County Beer Week kicks off this Sunday

California Beer Fest! Just the name sends beer fans into a frothy frenzy. Ventura’s very own beer festival is returning on the 21st, but there’s still an entire week to get through, a week chock-full of beer-centric events.

Kicking off on Sunday is the annual Ventura Beer Week, a week to indulge in beer serenity. Sunday morning at The Tavern, mixologists will host a brunch at which beer cocktails will take the place of your standard mimosa. Paired with a few of The Tavern’s regular brunch items, these cocktails – and if you’ve never had a beer cocktail this is a good place to start – are sure to get the party started.

Monday’s tap takeover at Winchester’s Grill & Saloon will feature Firesetone Walker Brewing and its massively popular “local” brews. Tuesday will see Lagunitas Brewing Company at the Ventura Harbor Comedy Club. Expect a show and a few brews. Nothing goes better with comedy than a hoppy IPA (or so I’ve been told).

Wednesday and Thursday will see a short film contest at Barrelhouse 101 and a blackjack tournament at Player’s Casino featuring the beers of Ninkasi.

Anacapa Brewing has already devised a unique way to get a real taste of Ventura — “Barking up the Right Tree” is a brown ale brewed with actual bark from Ventura’s landmark Two Trees.

The real star of the week (besides the festival itself) will be Friday’s VIP Brew with a View invitational, wherein Ventura County’s best chefs will pair their dishes with some of VC’s best breweries at the Crowne Plaza.

Ladyface Alehouse’s French- and Belgian-inspired brews will be paired with Camarillo’s Twenty 88 Chef Candace Hilger, while Anacapa’s brews will go well with Chef Tim Kilcoyne of the Scratch food truck. Also appearing are Surf, The Lab and Firestone Walker.

All of this will culminate in Ventura County’s largest beer festival on the 21st, where for four hours folks will get a sampling of close to 40 different breweries from across the country, followed by a day full of “BBQ and Blues” (perfect to nurse a hangover, if the need should arise).

Relax, grab your 3-ounce glass and taste the week away. You don’t have to be anywhere, right?

5 O’Clock Somewhere is a new column and will run every other week for the latest in tempting intoxication around Ventura County.
