Record Store Day

By Chris Jay 04/19/2012

Now in its fifth year, Record Store Day, Saturday, April 21, which was initially created to increase support of independent record stores, has now grown into an eagerly awaited event with exclusive releases and live performances at record stores across the country. Here’s a roundup of local Record Store Day events. For more information about Record Store Day and to see the full list of exclusive releases, visit  www.recordstoreday.com.

American Pie Records
1412 Tower Square, # 2, Ventura
www.americanpierecords.com

Nestled in the industrial area behind the Target Shopping Center, American Pie Records is a trip worth making for the collector. With somewhat random hours, be sure to call ahead. The store’s owner, proud Vietnam veteran and Nascar enthusiast Dr. D, stocks lots of rare and hard-to-find records for the hard-core vinyl lover.

Buffalo Records
92 S. Laurel St., Ventura
www.buffalorecords.org

Downtown Ventura’s Buffalo Records is only one of two officially participating record store, and it’s promising to have some of the exclusive Record Store Day releases in stock along with the usual excellent selection of new and used vinyl and CDs.

Grady’s Record Refuge
2546 E. Main St., Ventura
www. gradysrecordrefuge.com

Grady’s Record Refuge in Midtown Ventura will be celebrating the day with guest DJ sets starting at 11 a.m. Then, at 3 p.m., there will be live performances from Plastic Spikes and Massenger, the new project from Seth Pettersen and Mike Gleeson.

Peacock’s Record Bar
333 W. Fourth St., Oxnard

Peacock’s isn’t officially participating in Record Store Day, but having been in the same location since 1969, it’s worth a visit.

Record Outlet
1489 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks
www.recordoutlet.com

On the county’s east side, the only record store still standing is Thousand Oak’s Record Outlet, which will be holding a sale and breaking out some of its rarer inventory for what is expected to be a solid turnout.

Salzer’s Records
5777 Valentine Road, Ventura
www.salzers.com

The long-standing grand-daddy of local record stores will be turning the single-day event into a weeken- long celebration. First up on Thursday at 11 a.m. is an in-store signing with underground rap hero Tech N9ne, who will be appearing later that night at the Ventura Theater. Then, on Friday night, local pickers The Ventucky String Band will be doing an in-store performance at 8 p.m., where their self-titled debut will be available for the first time. Salzer’s will be carrying a massive number of exclusive releases, which at last count totaled more than 300. Visit the website for specifics. Doors open at 10 a.m., and expect early birds to be in line, as many record store releases wind up on eBay before the day is over. Salzer’s will also have live appearances by local artists Gentlemen, 50 Sticks of Dynamite and D on Darox and the Melody Joy Bakers, starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
