Soroptomist scholarships available
Applications for two scholarships, at $1,000 each, offered by the Ventura arm of Soroptomist International are being accepted.
The group’s Violet Richardson Award, open to young women ages 14 to 17, honors winners of the scholarship for their volunteer efforts in local schools or communities. Recipients of this scholarship are automatically eligible for additional Soroptomist awards, the club announced.
A second scholarship, the Women’s Opportunity Award, targets women who provide the primary financial support for their families and are enrolled or accepted in a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program at the same time.
Applications are due by Jan. 15, 2010 and are available from Kay Armstrong, 656-5218, or via email at SIVenturaclub@gmail.com.
Ages 2 to 24 eligible for H1N1 vaccine
Ventura County residents up to the age of 24 are now eligible to receive the swine flu vaccine, the county public health department authorized
this week.
The vaccine, the department states in a press release, became locally available two weeks ago in the form of the LAIV, or the Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine, as an inhalant; an inactivated injectable version is expected to arrive soon.
Those older than 24 were not included in the public health notice because they have been shown to be at low risk for serious illness from the swine flu, although when more vaccines arrive in Ventura County, additional, eligible groups should include both pregnant women and high-risk individuals up to 64 years old.
Public Health has recommended that anyone with questions about H1N1 should visit vchca.org/ph, or call 981-5390.
$50K in grants awarded to local nonprofits
Seven local community nonprofit organizations will each receive a share of $50,000 in grant funding from the Social Justice Fund for Ventura County, SJF has announced.
Under the annual grant cycle, $5,000 was awarded to Arts for Action in South Oxnard, for its Media Justice and Paint Not Prison programs; $8,530 to the El Centrito Family Learning Center in Oxnard; $5,000 to the Foundation for Educational and Employment Resources Development for the Grow Green Oxnard project; $5,000 to support Kids vs. Global Warming; $9,970 to the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project; $9,000 to the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper for the Halaco Superfund Community Education and Engagement program; and $7,500 to the Ventura County Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice.
Each recipient, according to SJF, was chosen for their work towards organizing systemic social change in Ventura County. The awards, according to a press release, will be formally presented during a reception for grantees, donors and persons interested in the Fund Nov. 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Ventura.
