Senior Summit aims to give seniors a healthy boost

Ventura County’s senior citizens are about to have an opportunity to get themselves into tip-top shape when the fourth Senior Summit begins this Saturday.

The County of Ventura’s Senior Summit returns to the campus of California State University, Channel Islands, with a series of lectures and classes on how to stay healthy in the senior years.

At the past four events, several hundred seniors have attended each. This year, County Supervisor Linda Parks, District 2, is expecting no different.

“This is different from an expo because we really encourage dialogue and in-depth information coming from our experts,” said Parks.

The VC Senior Summit began in 2004 and since has had different themes based on where seniors face assistance or knowledge gaps. The first focused on lifestyle concerns dealing with housing and transportation. Others have revolved around the economy of aging and dealing with the integration of physical and mental health.

The ability to speak with professionals candidly about issues affecting seniors is what makes the summit unique, says Parks.

“When was the last time you’ve been able to talk to your doctor for 45 minutes?” asked Parks. “Here they’ll be able to have access to our health care professionals.”

Included in the summit are a multitude of workshops with topics ranging from plastic surgery and preventing falls, to understanding osteoporosis and hearing loss. The theme of this year’s summit is keeping the body “tuned up,” with workshop titles like “Igniting the Spark Plugs” and “Adjusting your Headlights.”

A new addition this year is a bus to take seniors from several locations around the county to the CSUCI campus for free.

“Let’s see if we can get them there for free, have a free lunch and free workshops,” said Parks. “It’s wonderful that we have such generous sponsors and we’re just delighted that we can do this for free.”

Guest speakers will include Hank Lacayo, president of the Congress of California Seniors, who will give a presentation and awards for eldest active seniors. A keynote presentation, “Living Your Dream,” will be presented by The Oaks at Ojai spa founder Sheila Cluff.

Included in the free event will be health screenings in three sessions as well as flu shots and an opportunity to discuss and better understand the Affordable Healthcare Act.

The VC Senior Summit takes place this Saturday, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at CSU, Channel Islands, 1 University Dive., Camarillo. For more information and to find pick-up locations for the free bus, visit www.ventura.org/seniorsummit or call your county supervisor.
