The Hollywood Beach Wine Company will be opening at 3500 S. Harbor Blvd, suite 111, Channel Islands Harbor. The restaurant and bar will serve quality food from a variety of local vendors, as well as an international selection of beer and wine. The executive chefs are Adrien Nieto and Derrick Prince from TV’s season two of Master Chef. … Zephyr Sports, a surf, skate and paintball equipment retailer, will host a grand opening celebration July 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 2978 Seaborg Ave, Ventura. For more information, call 275-2040 or go to zephyrsports.com. The Wedding Tulle Box is opening at 820 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks. A year round wedding showroom, it will offer brides-to-be wedding day options such as cakes, venues, entertainment and much more.
Rob Orth, the executive director of Project Understanding, will soon assume the role of director of social services for the Salvation Army in Ventura. His new position is active as of Aug. 1 and Sandra Turner Morales will serve as interim executive director. … Museum of Ventura County Executive Director Tim Schifferaccepted a new job as executive director of the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa. Schiffer served as the museum’s director since 1999 and began as a curator in 1993. … Brianna Vasquez is the newest board member of advocate organization Housing Opportunities Made Easier (HOME). Vasquez has extensive knowledge on providing relocation assistance. She moved to Ventura County from Seattle and joined Hamner, Jewell & Associates in 2011. … The Refill Shoppe of Ventura will be moving to a larger space at 363 E. Main St. The last operational day at its current location at 1068 E Main St. will be July 21, and the Refill Shoppe will open at its new location Aug. 1.

The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Ventura County announced the recipients of the 2012 WIB Awards at its annual meeting on June 28, at the Ventura County Office of Education in Camarillo. … Travis Mack, president/CEO of Saalex Solutions Inc., in Camarillo received the WIB Champion for Prosperity Award, which is presented to a public entity or private business for supporting workforce development in Ventura County through job creation and retention. The City of Port Hueneme and Eric Birns, president and CEO of BIRNS, Inc. of Oxnard received the WIB Youth Opportunity Award, which is given to two recipients for providing internships or employment opportunities that help grow and strengthen Ventura County’s future workforce. The Alma Ferrel, owner of ABC Kids Preschool & Childcare in Fillmore received the WIB Leadership Award, which recognizes someone who embodies the spirit and purpose of workforce development in Ventura County--a real role model who takes on and solves workforce challenges. Sharon Dwyer, economic development project manager at the Ventura County Community College District, which goes to partnerships that help meet employer needs or improve the relevance and capacity of education and workforce training in Ventura County. … The Los Angeles Press Club honored KCLU’s Jim Rondeau as Best Radio Anchor for the second year in a row at its 54th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards Gala on June 24. Rondeau is the program director and morning anchor for the National Public Radio station serving Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. John North, KCLU’s special projects producer, was honored for Best Radio Documentary for “Bullying: Kids in Crisis” during the ceremony at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The hour-long special, which judges described as “excellent and compelling,” examined bullying in Ventura and Santa Barbara county schools. … Luis Martinez, the executive chef at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach, placed first at the 2012 Casa Pacifica Angels Wine and Food Festival culinary competition. He competed against 30 other highly skilled Ventura County chefs. … The Oxnard Chamber of Commerce awarded Oxnard’s Stephen MacIntosh the Man of the Year honor. The award is presented to a man whose actions contribute to the improvement of Oxnard. MacIntosh has been general manager for Republic Services since Jan. 2011, serves on several boards and aids nonprofit organizations.

The Downtown Ventura Organization and its affiliates are hosting a fundraiser, the Hope-a-Thon, through August. The funds will be used to support the Homeless2Home program, which allows outreach workers to take short- and long-term proactive measures with homeless individuals. Participants make a $20 donation at Hollywood Fitness Downtown Ventura and will receive a complimentary membership to the gym. Participants raise money by seeking out sponsors to donate based on the amount of time participants spend working out at the gym. … The Oxnard Fire Department will receive a $25,000 grant from State Farm, aimed at reducing the number of drowning incidents at Oxnard beaches. The grant money will be allocated to campaigns that boost public education and awareness about water safety.
The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District presented the Port of Hueneme with a $250,000 grant to aid in bringing in shoreside power to the port’s docks. The proceeds will be applied toward the costs of engineering for the shoreside power facility, which is scheduled for completion in 2014.
