Itzel Gonzalez won the 31st Annual California Strawberry Festival

Itzel Gonzalez was selected from 1,800 entries as the winner of the 31st Annual California Strawberry Festival Youth Art Design Contest. Gonzalez is a sixth-grade student at Cesar Chavez Elementary in Oxnard; her “berrylicious” masterpiece features a ruby-red strawberry wearing a smiling face. … Jean Branstetter was named April’s teacher of the month by the Ventura Commerce and Education Foundation. Branstetter is a first-grade teacher at Portola Elementary in Ventura and during her 30 years of teaching, she has served as a teacher in charge, grade-level representative, Saturday-school lead, PTA member and as a volunteer at Family Literary Night and Adventure Portola Day. … Mohammed A. Hasan was honored by the County of Ventura, state of California and the U.S. Congress during his firm’s 30th anniversary celebration in Ventura. Hasan Consultants is a civil and environmental firm that services both private and public sectors; Hasan is an instructor at California community colleges and speaks six languages. … Jackie Pearce, Joseph A. Castañeda, Laura K. McAvoy, Richard Shipley, the late Fred Kavli, the Orfalea Foundation and the Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Foundation and Family received awards from the Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF) for investing time and energy to build a better Ventura County. The individuals and organizations were recognized at VCCF’s Fourth Annual Community Leadership Awards; all proceeds benefit the Mary Schwabauer Leadership Fund to support VCCF operations. … School on Wheels recently held an appreciation event to honor more than 30 volunteers. The funds were awarded for the program’s entrepreneurial development program that provides business training and microloans to primarily low-income, Spanish-speaking residents in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. … Clif Bar Mountains2Beach Marathon and Half Marathon committed a minimum of $20,000 to the Ventura Education Partnership (VEP) in support of the upcoming free healthy living community event, Summerfest. The donation, along with the funds raised through Summerfest, will help to support healthy programs and activities in the Ventura Unified School District. … The San Buenaventura Friends of the Library awarded its yearly donation to Ventura libraries. A $57,523 check was presented to be used for collection materials at E.P. Foster Library, Avenue Library and Saticoy Library for the benefit of the library patrons in Ventura. … Westpark Community Center received $2,200 from Altrusa International Inc. to aid in supplies for the youth center.  
Education
The Ventura College Foundation (VCF) will award $300,000 in scholarships to nearly 200 Ventura College students on May 3 at the Ventura Beach Marriot during its 27th Annual Scholarship Awards Gala. VCF received more than 400 applications for the scholarships, which range from $500 to $9,000 and honor students’ academic achievement or their chosen fields of study.
Eco-friendly
CSU, Channel Islands (CSUCI), was named by The Princeton Review as one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible “green” universities in its “Guide to Green Colleges.” CSUCI is one of only 332 out of the nation’s 4,300 colleges and universities to earn recognition for sustainability. … Rincon Consultants was awarded the LEED Silver Certification for its Ventura headquarters by the U.S. Green Building Council. Rincon is an environmental sciences and planning consulting firm recognized for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
