Best place to learn how to fix up a bicycle

HUB Community Bike Shop

reveal the floor plans for the new shop.

People who want to ride their bikes more but may not have enough money or mechanical knowledge to keep them running smoothly have a new opportunity to get some friendly help.

The Ventura Bike HUB is settling into a permanent location on Ventura’s Westside in a mixed-use low-income housing project at 1150 N. Ventura Ave., thanks to a partnership with the Ventura Housing Authority. The group used a coffee shop and other locations in recent months for its charitable mission encouraging bike riding. It’s a project of VCCOOL (Ventura Climate Care Options Organized Locally), which will also have new offices in the building.

Master Mechanic Toby Smith says even more than fixing bikes at a low rate of $7 an hour, the thrill for him comes from showing others how to make repairs on their own. Once people have their bikes in good operating order, they’re much more encouraged to ride, according to Smith. “When you see someone work on their bike, they take it on a little test ride and come back with huge smiles. They say ‘I’m so much happier now. I can now actually go out and ride. I don’t have to sit there and stare at my bike with a flat tire in the garage,’ ” says Smith.

VCCOOL Executive Director Rachel Morris says the group is reaching out to all kinds of people who may never have thought about using a bike as a practical alternative to driving a car to get around. “It’s a unique opportunity to change our culture as a whole,” says Morris. “It’s bikes, it’s the economy, it’s health, because, of course, it’s a lot healthier to bike.”

Best seamstress for the band

Elizabeth Cornejo at Just Lovely Fashions

Elizabeth Cornejo.

She didn’t marry a music man and she ain’t no tiny dancer, but for more than a decade Elizabeth Cornejo at Just Lovely Fashions has been the go-to girl for local rockers who need their stage clothes expertly tailored. The Nicaraguan-born tailor can hem, taper, let out, take in and administer pretty much any other tweak necessary to make you look fabulous in your clothes. A designer as well, Cornejo will collaborate with clients, using her ideas and/or theirs to create unique fashions for everything from career and casual wear to bridal apparel. Longtime devotee Zachary James relies on her for nearly all his alterations and glamorous stage attire, from custom-made Teddy Boy drape jackets to every pair of jeans he’s worn in the last 10 years. “She pulls out the hem so they actually fit my daddy long legs,” he says.  She also worked on a couple of garments he wore on The Late Show with David Letterman and while touring with Lil Wayne. Guitarist and happy customer Joe Baugh says Cornejo is an expert at fit and always accommodates his busy schedule. “I’ve come in with a day or two to spare before an important performance, and she always makes sure my clothes come back quick and look great.” And when she’s not wrapped up in thread and measuring tape, Cornejo is busy raising funds and collecting items for schoolchildren back home, where, with the help of her clients, she’s been able to make a real difference.

Best place to find your green thumb

Ventura County Fair

Six time best in show winner, Pacific PONDS of Oxnard,
for the koi pond exhibit.

For Ventura County locals, the fair always promises a good time. The foodies can gorge themselves on deep fried pickles and chocolate covered bacon. Thrill seekers can spin, slide, swing and jump to their hearts’ delight or their stomachs’ discontent on dozens of rides. Animal lovers can get up close and personal with horses, goats, pigs, chickens, sheep, cows, etc. The musical lineup always draws a crowd, even some groupies, and fairgoers can get their holiday and birthday shopping done in the two main exhibit halls. And to top off all the excitement and stimulation, the nights always end with a bang: firework displays. With so much going on, what more could one ask for? Well, one thing comes to mind: A little bit of serenity. Enter the floriculture/landscaping exhibit.

With dirt paths covered in bark, onlookers meander through the displays — grassy knolls with whimsical gnomes, sustainable cacti and succulent gardens, rose gardens with rare breeds, delicate bridges built over miniature creeks, and small waterfalls cascading into koi ponds.  It must be the combination of the calm trickling of water, the energy of living vegetation, the array brilliant and yet soothing colors of the flowers that makes for a great respite in the midst of tens of thousands of people. And while one may find inspiration in the displays built by amateurs, aka local folks who just love to garden, for those who don’t like getting dirty, there are always the professional displays, such as six time best of show winner Pacific PONDS of Oxnard, and for the right price, you can have your own peace of mind in your backyard. (Give Rocky a call at Pacific PONDS at 988-3888. He will steer you in the right direction.)
