Description WHAT ARE 'FRANKENFISH' and WHY SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED? Join us for a free showing of the short (28 min.) documentary, MONSTER SALMON, about genetically engineered (GE) salmon, which is close to being approved by the FDA. If approved, it would be the first transgenic animal ever allowed into the US food supply. This 'frankenfish' has been manipulated in a laboratory to continually produce growth hormone year round instead of only during warm weather, allowing it to reach market weight in 50% less time than non-GE salmon. The elevated levels of the growth hormone, IGF-1, in these fish is of great concern due to the link in humans with prostate, breast and colon cancers. These GE fish threaten the very genetic integrity of the food chain when considering the fact that they will ultimately escape, threatening the world's wild salmon and other fish populations. The showing will be held at Horizon Hills School, 33 Greta St., Thousand Oaks 91360 at 10 AM on Sat. 2/2/2013.
